Hanging out with a fellow Aussie in Rome

Hi There, my name is Margaret Baldassa and I would like to welcome you to my place, home of The Chameleon Traveller. I hope that by telling a story or twenty of my travels around this gorgeous globe that I’ll be able to inspire and assist others to get out of their comfort zone and look beyond our borders .

As for me, well I grew up in country Victoria, on a sweet little dairy farm. My parents are Italian immigrants that came here with the desire for a better life for them and there intended family. Thanks to them, I managed to score myself an Italian Passport, this being my ticket to Europe and motivating me for a life on the move.

TIME TO TRAVEL

I got the travelling bug over 15 years ago when I headed to Europe in 1999 on a one way ticket. Thinking that I’d do a few years travelling, get it out of my system, and then settle down to a career, house, blah, blah, blah.. Fantastic for some but it wasn’t meant to be for me. It appears that this wanderlust is here to stay and I’m more than happy to nurture my own baby, Called Travels (she’s matured and grown up so well, Bless!).

Since then I’ve been spending my time gallivanting between my home base in Melbourne, heading off wherever the wind blows me in Europe and a few side trips to South East Asia (as you do). Currently I’m working, camping, cruising my way around Australia, getting to really know my own backyard that much better!!

WORK, WORK, WORK

Working in far TOO many pubs, restaurants, cafes, hostels, hotels, etc to name (or even to remember). All for the benefit of saving for my next travel adventure (sound familiar). Work, save, travel seems to be my little ditty to get me through most days!!

I’ve also enjoyed getting into a bit of office work when I could by doing Administration, call centres, help desks. And then there’s all those random jobs i’ve thrown in between. Like working in an industrial laundry in Ireland (bloody great crack!), small stint as a gay male escort driver (different!), even as a sous chef in a 5 star resort in Switzerland (what a learning curve that was!!).

Since moving off the dairy farm when I was 18 yrs old, I spent the next 6 years working to pay for my next weekend. Then I decided it was time to travel!! And 15 years on it doesn’t look like this wanderlust will ever stop.

I’VE BEEN EVERYWHERE, MAN!! sing along!!

So where have I travelled?? My list isn’t so big, but it’s quality not quantity for me, right!! I’ve had the pleasure to go to Argentina, Finland, France, Wales, Greece, the Vatican City, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Laos, Thailand, U.S.A, and Vietnam.

Let me In!!

Who needs keys?? Get in!!

And Where have I lived?? Been a bit around Australia, England, Ireland, Italy, Holland, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland.

WHAT’S TO COME

For more stories and information about these trips stay tuned as over the coming months (maybe years, my storage boxes are DEEP!) I’ll sort through my boxes of goodies, rediscover my old diaries and post up plenty of photos. Here’s hoping that this will make you dust off that backpack and sent off for the next adventure.

Feel free to drop me a line or two, it would be great to hear some feedback or just to have a chat.

Looking forward to sharing the past, present and future with you all.

Cheers,

the chameleon traveller
