These activities will cost you a few dollars but they’re so worth it and i’m not talking about anything that will break the budget. You’re in the rainforest so you’re going to want to go and check out what it really holds. So here’s a few of my favourite places:
CAPE TRIB EXOTIC FRUIT
Tell me, are you tempted to try the wondrous fruit that grow in the tropics? And no, i’m not talking about your banana or pineapple variety. How about a sweet sapodilla, or a gooey soursop, or the juicy Jaboticaba?? Then the place to go for these and more zany varieties is the Cape Trib Exotic Fruit Farm, where they hold daily fruit tasting sessions at 2pm.
Wow, talk about a fruit sensation! For over 2 hrs you’ll get the chance to sample over 10 different fruits and the charming guides are so well-informed that at the end of it all you’ll be full in the belly from fantastic fruits and with a mind expanded on all those amazing tropical fruit facts. The time just flew by too quickly. I could happily spend an afternoon in their lovely settings. And afterward our guide took us for a guided walk through the orchard to show us some more fruit varieties and their working orchard of rasputan’s that helps keep the farm going. For only $25 per adult you’ll get enlightened on the fact of the fruits, entertained by the great guides and best of all, you get to eat these deliciously delectable delights.
DAINTREE ICE CREAM COMPANY
The next one is also afoodie one. It’s the Daintree Ice Cream Company. Set in the picturesque grounds containing the working orchard where the delicious ingredients are grown and the sensational ice cream is created. It’s an absolute bargain for $6- (just a Magnum up here will cost you $5) and for that you get a pre-set selection of 4 tropical fruit flavours.
This was what was on the chalk board the day I went to sample: Mango, Passionfruit, Wattleseed and Soursop. Seriously, who’s ever heard of wattlseed. It had a lovely coffee like taste and every single one of the flavours was just Amazing!!!! Not too sickly sweet like you’re processed goods and such a treat when the heat and humidity start to get too much in the day. You can see the fruit they’ll be using for future batches of ice-cream drying out back in the racks. And if you’ve got the time, take a stroll around the orchard grounds too.. Maybe do that before you get the ice-cream, makes it that much more worth it and rightly well-earned. Mmmmm. As they say: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!
DAINTREE DISCOVERY CENTRE
One place I have to highly recommend and I guess all the awards that they have won over the years must say something about them too, is the Daintree Discovery Centre. If you really want to learn more about the rainforest than this is the place to go. It might seem a little pricier at $32 per adult but trust me it is so well worth it.
The boardwalk takes you winding your way through the trees, ever slowly raising you up from the ground and leading you to the Canopy Tower, that then takes you all the way to the top, with a pretty impressive view in amongst the trees high reaches.
Included in the price is the audio guide that explains quite a few interesting facts about the workings of the forest. There’s also the Interpretive Display Centre where you can learn a thing or two about the beginnings of the forest, all the way back to Godwana days. Find out about the changes over the millions of years, the animals that live within and enjoy the brilliant video that shows how the true first Australians came over the land bridge from Asia and “The Monsters They Met”.
Once you get through all these, make sure you leave some time for the Cassowary Circuit and also the Bush Tucker Trail. Easy strolls through the rainforest and further highlighting the what’s what of this majestic mega old forest.
So, you see, the price you pay for what you get, for me, this one is definitely a winner. Oh, you also get a free Interpretive Guide Book to use while you wander through the Centre and to take home as a cool souvenir. AND, within this book is a 7 day free re-entry pass, just get it signed before you leave the first time.
Like I said, this one is a WINNER!!
Let me just say that aside from these great places there’s way more to see and do. Here’s a few more options that you can happily go and research for yourself. Drop me a line and tell me what you thought of them, maybe next time i’ll be tempted to them by your comments:
